Simply put, healing is “the process of making or becoming sound or healthy again”. It’s normally an afterthought. We scrape our knee and then need a bandaid. We misstep when running and then need time for our muscle to heal before going back at it again. We get back from a week of traveling and then need a few days to recover. But is that the way we should be doing it?
There are so many small ways in which we can heal the day to day wear and tear on our skin, bodies, and soul that we routinely forget about. New York Fashion Week takes a huge toll on me mentally, physically, and emotionally. Don’t get me wrong, I am eternally grateful that this is an experience I get to add to my life each year, but it entails an insane schedule with little time to eat, play, or sleep. So by the end of it, I am wiped out.
I made a vow to myself that this year was going to be different. I made a vow to myself that I would start taking better care of me – even when life gets insane (because isn’t that when we really need the self-care the most and the point where it’s most likely to fall to the end of our priority list?).
I packed myself protein bars and shakes so that even when I didn’t have time to eat I could put something fulfilling and nutritious into my body. I committed to getting in at least one work out (which I did – I went to my first Soul Cycle class and loved it!). And, I was extremely mindful about the brands and products I brought with me. I wanted to surround myself with items that were going to help me take better care of myself while I was there.
The two things that I want to draw your attention to in this post are 1) an energy healing necklace from Joree & Jane that’s both fashionable and restorative and 2) Air Repair Skincare – products that are specifically designed to combat the effects of environmental stressors on the skin.
First, I want to introduce you to Joree & Jane. This mother and daughter duo creates mindfully made crystal and gemstone necklaces that are both stylish and function to naturally heal, balance, and restore. In this look from New York Fashion Week, I’m wearing a beautiful raw cut blue hemimorphite necklace. If you’re into the healing power of crystals, hemimorphite is a protective stone linked to the throat chakra that puts you in touch with your inner self while also improving overall communication with others. The stone’s vibration is also said to increase joy and assist in healing relationships. I’m only just beginning to learn about the power of crystals (I mean, I teach yoga and I’m obsessed with all things gem related, so it only seems natural that this is something I should educate myself on), but this website gives simple, easy to digest explanations of the properties of various stones and crystals.
A first I wasn’t sure why, but I felt a deep connection to the brand when I found them on Instagram literally years ago. It wasn’t until I reached out about being featured during New York Fashion Week that I learned why I must have been drawn to these ladies. When Jordan (aka Joree) was 16, she planned her suicide. I’ve battled my fair share of suicidal thoughts over the years and, as many of you know, I lost my dad to suicide in high school. Jane (Jordan’s mom) is who saved her. It wasn’t until recently she learned that the reason her mom took up jewelry making was so that she could create while being close enough to keep an eye on her. Now Jane makes the jewelry and Joree takes care of all things marketing, branding, and business development related. Knowing the story behind the brand, wearing this necklace reminded me that no matter where I’m at or what I’m doing, protecting my mental wellness is of upmost importance.
And then, there’s the penalty that traveling takes on my skin. Have you ever noticed that the radiance, luster, and fullness of your skin diminishes in different environments and at different times of the year? Factors like sun, harsh winds, and extreme weather conditions are found to trigger “inflammatory mediators” which results in a phenomenon Air Repair Skincare founder Denise Spanek calls “inflam-aging”. That might sound like another fancy gimmick from just another beauty brand to get you to buy their stuff, but hold up. This Francophile and hot yoga addict has been a leading figure in the skincare industry for more than 25 years! She knows her stuff and has pioneered something truly innovative with Air Repair Skincare.
The Grab & Glow Essentials Skincare Kit ($45.00) they sent me for my trip had everything I needed and I’ll never travel without these products again. Not only are all the products carry-on friendly, but they are formulated with clean chemistry and healing botanicals to help skin through any type of environmental stress, including travel and flight fatigue (more on that here). These revolutionary products help to heal and soothe the skin instantly.
On the third day of my New York Fashion Week adventure, I woke up and was so frustrated with how dull, irritated, and dehydrated my skin looked. I hate putting makeup on my skin – especially concealer and foundation – when my skin is dry because it just makes any wrinkles look far worse than they actually are. After using the Soothing Cleansing Milk, Super Hydrating Eye Cream, Complexion Boosting Moisturizer, and Rescue Balm (I love this on my lips), my skin was more radiant, plump, and hydrated. My makeup went on much more smoothly than I expected and with a few sprays of the Complexion-Quenching Facial Mist throughout the day, my skin stayed ample throughout the day.
