In a critical and judgmental world, it’s easy to feel like all eyes are on you. The questions that run through your mind of whether or not someone is judging your imperfections simply because of unnecessary pressure. Let’s be honest, insecurities, may they be internal or external, are difficult to overcome. When perfecting your image or appearance, you need to first appreciate your unique style and own every fabulous flaw that you may see in the mirror despite any rules that the fashion industry supports.
Although the terms, “fashion” and “style” seem similar, they actually have different meanings. While fashion concerns specific trends and predictions, style is personal and expresses your inner being. Having an unshakable style can elevate your overall confidence and give you that extra push to embody your inner Anna Wintour. It is easier said than done, but stepping out of your comfort zone and owning your style will benefit self-acceptance. Just think, if this model can seriously walk down the runway with her face painted like a tiger, you can rock a giant tulle skirt with sneakers. Put on those blinders and strut down the street like it’s your runway.
If you are looking for that inspiration to pull out and rock those crazy pieces, turn your sight towards legendary style icon Iris Apfel. At 95 years old, she reigns queen over personal style. Said best herself, “Fashion you can buy but style you posses. The key to style is learning who you are… ” There’s no road map to style. It’s about self expression, and above all, attitude. Just like this denim on denim look below with butterfly and rose embroidery. Why spend precious moments wasting emotion on negative opinions when you have bravery and guts to stand out an be different.
During my personal fashion evolution in a small midwest college town, my ideas were wild and completely different from what defines the wardrobe of a typical student. Instead of wearing yoga pants and sweatshirts, I chose to strut to class in skirts and heels. Even though heels on a college campus are as impractical as a parka in the Sahara, I wore them simply because I loved how I looked. Trust me, I have heard all the comments. “Who is she trying to impress? Who does she think she is?” Facing criticism and smirks from others was no easy task. However, to be honest, I was never dressing to impress anyone. Picking through my closet for an outfit was the most exciting point of my day, and I loved experimenting with my pieces. Although I cringe every time I look back at those pictures from years ago, that time sparked my love for fashion while also giving me a thick skin. I also discovered incredible friends who stuck with me through my ingenious ideas along with my fashion faux-pas. I mean who says that your dad’s itchy sweaters from the 80’s ever go out of style? Oh and who could forget the floor length brown and white polka dot dress from the 90’s? Regardless, it was all a part of a learning experience that shaped who I am today.
This New York Fashion Week, the Desigual Spring/ Summer 2017 show sent adventurous designs down the catwalk and spoke to my former 17 year-old fashion enthusiast. The brand stood out on their own terms and with their distinct aesthetic, proved that it’s ok to break the rules, even on the runway. While most shows would be showing elegant gowns in all neutrals, Desigual focused on patchwork and eccentric beading to add a dynamic and cultural twist to what may seem to be just another fashion show. Seen below, from an army jacket, to a vest and certainly a jean jacket, patchwork adds interest to simple garments and creates coherent chaos in each piece.
In an industry focused on luxurious designs that show off your class and status, Desigual is able to spread their nomadic, care-free style to a jam packed audience at every fashion event. Despite the critics, the brand delivers a funky atmosphere with their designs and express their vibrant love for life through every garment. While the fashion industry stays stuck in a trend conscious mindset, the same looks can be seen amongst multiple different designers. You can only reimagine a trendy caped blazer in so many ways. On the other hand, Desigual breathes a breath of fresh air into these staple pieces and adds the much needed variety with their fearless, standout collection. Who says that you cant mix patterns? In the top and bottom pictures below, the dress and jacket combinations prove that even clashing patterns from head to toe can still look chic and stylish. The same goes for a simple pair of joggers with a blouse shown in the middle photo below. From a formal occasion to running errands, patterns work for every outing.
When it comes down to the bottom line, everyone is human. We are all entitled to our thoughts and opinions. Be bold and challenge every rule that contradicts the “Fashion Police.” Dare them to try and test you but never let them affect you. Free your inner fashionista and have fun with your wardrobe! At the end of the day, you can hang everything back up in your closet and start fresh the next day. After all, in this turbulent world, why not stand out and create a little extra inner happiness for yourself? Remember, be brave, and be you.
