Running a business is not for everybody. While being an entrepreneur is very rewarding, it can also be very demanding. You are the go-to person, whether you are a soloprenuer or running a business with a team that reports to you. No matter the size of your business, it can be so easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day work that sometimes the business starts to run you – taking a toll on your health and overall wellness.
Here are five wellness tips to help business owners:
1.) Find ways to get social. I’m not talking about social media. I am talking about actually getting social with those important to you in your personal life. Sure, interacting with some of those special to you online or even keeping in touch on a regular basis through text messaging and that is fine, but when was the last time that you actually had real face time with those in your circle? If you are in a situation where you live too far away to pay a friend, family member or special someone an in-person visit, why not give something like a Meetup group a try? There’s something for everyone whether you’re looking for a book club, a sports league, social group to hang with, or you want to pick up that hobby you’ve been meaning to start.
2.) Develop a support system. Who’s got your back when things are about to go down? Running a business can get lonely, and even frustrating at times. You’ve got deadlines to meet for clients, your BFF’s wedding to attend in a matter of days (and nothing to wear), your upstairs neighbor’s house slippers that seem to be made of cement blocks are keeping you up at ridiculous hours and one of your clients all of a sudden has amnesia when it comes to paying you. I get it. I get it, I get it. Times like these are when it’s more than important to have that go-to person when you’re sitting criss-cross apple sauce in the middle of your living floor questioning, well… everything.
3.) Level up. What are working you for? What are you working towards? Goals that challenge and help you grow and personally, professionally, and are in line with your value system are important to being a successful entrepreneur (try setting goals with soul). So, take that class you’ve had bookmarked on your computer for… forever (you know what I’m talking about). Sign up to volunteer to help a group with something that’s within your expertise, or help out in an area that will allow you to develop a new skill set. When you work towards making yourself a better person, you’re making those around you better, too. Go make it happen!
4.) Treat yourself. Self-care is vital to keeping your business afloat. What good are you to your business and those important in your life, if you aren’t taking care of numero uno? Hello? The last time I checked, we all only get one life. Only you know what you need to make sure you are at 100%. If you don’t know, take a moment to define what those needs are so you can get your life together. You cannot pour from an empty cup!
5.) Keep it moving. Yes, move! Exercise comes in all varieties, so find something that works for you. Even incorporating light exercise into your lifestyle helps you when it comes to focusing on running your business. Need ideas or support for simple ways to get moving? Move It Monday is a great community worth checking out. There’s lots of great tips and printables on their site to help you get started. Don’t forget to find ways to eat sensible meals, and of course, get some sleep! It’s only a matter of time before your health and business start to take a toll if you aren’t taking care of yourself.
