On this day during New York Fashion Week, we spent the morning at The Plaza Hotel for the Dennis Basso show. I had never been inside the gold-trimmed ballroom before, and I was speechless – read Christina’s post (coming soon!) for more on the atmosphere and collection. So, what was it about this look that made it appropriate for such a luxurious morning?
It’s in the details.
I’m definitely a culprit, especially lately, of going through life and neglecting the details. I know that little things matter, like leaving 5 minutes earlier, sending thank you notes, and proof reading for typos, but with an ever growing to-do list and seemingly less and less hours in the day (because apparently that’s what happens when you start getting older), it’s so easy to put off the little things or to never do them at all. But, this little bit of tangible evidence in support of how important details are is one of the many things lately that have made me take a closer look at life and how I’m living it.
Details are often what we actually have immediate control over compared to all the big life stuff that seems a million years away or far outside of our individual, day-to-day power of influence. Details are the difference between a boring conference room and a breathtaking ballroom. Details are the difference between a barely satisfied client and one who is going to babble about your work nonstop to all of her people. Details are the difference between wearing these boyfriend jeans to Chic-fil-A (which I just did this weekend with this same pair of jeans) and wearing them to The Plaza.
A friend actually gave me this pair of Joe’s Jeans a few months ago (similar here, and here) and they had been sitting in the back of my car for forever. But, when I was packing for NYFW, I was SO excited about this bow-in-the-front burgundy blouse from Bungalow 20 that I couldn’t wait to decide what to pair it with. Christina suggested boyfriend jeans and I remembered I had these!
The deep rich color of this top also provided the perfect backdrop for this sparkling choker from Sweetpiece Jewelry. The Gem behind the brand, Marjolein Poppema, creates the most beautiful pieces embellished with Swarovski crystal and other sterling silver findings. Her jewelry is essential to your collection because it can be worn day or night, depending on the other details you pair it with in your look. I’m in awe of how all of the pieces seem simple and minimal, but yet they’re distinctive compared to what I’ve seen before, and I’m telling you, it all comes down to the details. I loved finding out that Marjolein is an avid painter. You can tell because, like every stoke when painting, every stone, chain, link, and clasp has been placed with intention and flow. See for yourself!
And of course, the best way to dress up boyfriend jeans is to wear them with heels. The nude Stuart Weitzman ankle strap sandals suggested by Christina (who also let me borrow them, have I told you how much I love her?) worked double duty to elongate my legs and add an extra dash of class to this outfit.
I also have to point out this amazing lip treatment from Air Repair Skincare (more on the travel essential brand here). This [sp] Lip Quencher ($14) plumps and repairs lips. Here, I have it on top of 100% Pure’s Pomegranate Oil Anti Aging Lipstick in Foxglove because my lips felt like they needed a bit of a refresh. With a subtle hint of color, it’s a great gloss to wear on it’s own, too, and volumizes lips by increasing water retention.
In the comments below, tell me about one detail you’re going to pay a little more attention to in your life this week!
